Thai Tonal Contrast under Changes in Speech Rate and Stress

چکیده

This study investigates how the five lexical tones in Thai are realized on primary-, secondary-, and unstressed syllables produced at fast, normal and slow rate. The results revealed that 1) speech rate does not have any significant effect on F0 height, excursion size and F0 peak and valley locations of Thai tones, 2) tones on primary-stressed syllables have a larger excursion size than those on secondaryand unstressed syllables, and 3) the five-way tonal contrast in the language is maintained regardless of changes in speech rate and stress.

Using Tone Information in Thai Spelling Speech Recognition

Spelling recognition is a workaround to recognize unfamiliar words, such as proper names or unregistered words in a dictionary, which typically cause ambiguous pronunciations. In the Thai spelling task, some alphabets cannot be differentiated by only spectral cues. In such cases, tonal cues play a critical role in distinguishing those alphabets. In this paper, we therefore introduce Thai spelli...

Perception of lexical tone across languages: evidence for a linguistic mode of processing

Pairs of Thai tones were presented for perceptual discrimination in three linguistic contexts (normal speech, low-pass filtered speech, and as musical (violin) sounds) to tonal language speakers, Thai and Cantonese, and non-tonal (English) language speakers. English speakers discriminated the tonal contrasts significantly better in the musical context than in filtered speech, and in filtered sp...

Tone features, tone perception, and peak alignment in Thai.

This paper investigates the relationship between the phonological features of tone and tone perception in Thai. Specifically, it tests the hypothesis (proposed by Morén & Zsiga) that the principle perceptual cues to the five-way tonal contrast in Thai are high and low pitch targets aligned to moras. Results of four perception studies, one using natural speech and three using digitally-altered s...

Categorical Perception of Lexical Tone by Tonal and Non-tonal Language Speakers

Categorical perception occurs when a physical continuum is perceived discontinuously. In speech, a vast body of research has shown that consonants are perceived categorically whereas vowels are perceived continuously. The other major phonetic unit of speech, lexical tone, has been relatively neglected in categorical perception studies. Here tonal language (Thai), and non-tonal language (Austral...

Lexical tone and pitch perception in tone and non-tone language speakers

Past research on categorical perception of lexical tone has produced contradictory results. In Experiment 1 tonal (Mandarin, Vietnamese) and non-tonal (Australian) adults were tested for identification and discrimination on speech and non-speech (sine-wave) tone continua. Tonal language speakers’ category boundaries and discrimination peaks were near the middle of the asymmetric continuum, wher...
